Regeneration of the long term denervated human muscle

چکیده

Light and electron microscopy and antibody for embryonic myosin show that myogenic regenerative events are present in human muscle up to 37-year postspinal cord injury. After 5 years of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in the recovered muscles regenerative events are present, but at a lower rate than in longterm denervated muscles. We conclude that the FES-training of paraplegic subjects is safe (it does not induce more muscle damage/regeneration than denervation per se) and effective (the mean size of the myofibers went from 15.4 to 27.0, that is, a 76% increase after two years of FES).

Contractile Proteins Content of Long Term Permanent Denervated Human Muscle after Functional Electrical Stimulation

Severe atrophy of skeletal muscles occurs during long-term permanent denervation (LTPD). We studied 14 human muscle biopsies taken from patients suffering lower motoneuron denervation from 2 to 30 years. Patients were treated with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for different periods of time (0.5 to 6 years). We describe new gel electrophoresis analyses, which allow to quantify protein ...

Muscle fiber regeneration in long term denervation

Despite the ravages of long term denervation there is structural and ultrastructural evidence for survival of muscle fibers in mammals, with some fibers surviving at least ten months in rodents and 3-6 years in humans. Further, in rodents there is evidence that muscle fibers may regenerate even after repeated damage in the absence of the nerve, and that this potential is maintained for several ...

The Biology and Restorative Capacity of Long-Term Denervated Skeletal Muscle

Mammalian skeletal muscle undergoes profound atrophy after denervation. The functional restoration of denervated muscle is a significant clinical problem, and the success of restorative attempts decreases substantially after several months of denervation. Rat extensor digitorum longus muscles are capable of excellent restoration for the first 2-3 months after denervation, but after that time th...
